In the past, we have warned individuals not to rely on AI for writing college essays.
There are several reasons why AI in college essays is bad:
It is easily detectable, and college admissions are running essays through their own AI software to determine the likelihood that AI wrote the essay in question
AI data is not great - there are repeated examples in the news of AI making poor decisions or displaying incorrect information
Most applicants are incapable of viewing AI as a tool to strengthen their own applications, rather than a crutch to rely on
This is not just some “you need to work hard to make it worthwhile” statement. Believe us, we are never in favor of creating or doing things that are detrimental to you in the long-run.
But while we are not high on AI at the moment being heavily relied upon for college admissions, there are several ways that AI can support the college or graduate student.
This article hopes to highlight some ways you can use it to improve your own knowledge.
AI Strengths and Limits
Before we dive into use cases, there is a basic understanding of AI needed.
Without going into the weeds, AI is a powerful tool because it can eliminate the need for you to need a “specialist” or “expert” in a given area to be able to apply it into real world settings.
In other words, historically, you needed someone to be able to design a logo for a website. That person was paid to then create a logo for you and you needed them to be able to make edits. The entire iterative process could take days, even weeks.
AI changes that.
